Green Ports Cluster for a Sustainable Mediterranean Maritime and Transport Ecosystem - GREENMEDPORTS

The GREENMEDPORTS project tackles the environmental impact of maritime transport in the Mediterranean, a vital trade hub with high emissions. It aims to build a transnational ecosystem for sustainable maritime operations through a Carbon Footprint Platform and a Green Label Port certification. By upgrading port operations, promoting shared standards, and boosting collaboration among stakeholders, it supports the shift toward carbon-neutral, resilient, and greener transport across the region: (Algeria, Egypt, Italy, Jordan, Malta and Tunisia). The project also enhances innovation and competitiveness by fostering knowledge exchange and aligning local strategies with EU climate goals. Ultimately, it strives to position Mediterranean ports as leaders in the global transition to sustainable maritime transport.

Highlights

Green Ports Cluster for a Sustainable Mediterranean Maritime and Transport Ecosystem (GREENMEDPORTS)

GREENMEDPORTS is a three-year Interreg NEXT-MED project (2025–2028) aimed at building a transnational ecosystem for sustainable maritime and port operations across the Mediterranean region. The project supports the transition towards low-carbon, resilient, and environmentally sustainable transport systems, with ports acting as key drivers of change.

The project is coordinated by the North Tyrrhenian Port Network Authority (Italy) and brings together port authorities, public institutions, and technical partners from six Mediterranean countries.

GREENMEDPORTS aims to:

enhance cooperation among port communities at local and transnational levels,

support ports in measuring and reducing their carbon footprint,

promote shared standards and innovative solutions for sustainable port operations,

align local port strategies with EU climate and energy objectives.

By fostering knowledge exchange and collaboration, the project seeks to position Mediterranean ports as leaders in the global transition to sustainable maritime transport.

Main Project Components

The project is structured around three complementary pillars:

  1. Cooperation

Development of port-based clusters and communities at local level (including port authorities, terminal operators, logistics and hinterland actors), combined with a transnational network of stakeholders sharing common objectives, strategies, and action plans.

  1. GreenMed Carbon Footprint Platform (CFP)

A core transversal pilot action consisting of:

  • a transnational digital platform, and

  • local pilot actions feeding data into it.

The platform supports ports in digitalisation, strategy definition, and informed decision-making towards decarbonisation, while considering national regulatory frameworks.

  1. Scaling-up and Strategy

Development of a Green Label Port certification scheme, supported by a transnational low-carbon transport strategy and related regional implementation action plans, ensuring replicability and long-term Mediterranean impact.

Geographical Scope

GREENMEDPORTS is implemented in six port areas across:

Italy, Algeria, Egypt, Malta, Jordan, and Tunisia, supporting pilot actions centred on the Carbon Footprint Platform and the Green Label Port certification system.
